D.A.N.E Jam 2017 - Back Bone BMX

D.A.N.E Jam 2017

Some of the crowd, stoked to have a crew arrive despite the time change. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Six years have passed since Dane Searls' passed away, it never gets any easier to think of the reason why this jam is held. But all you can do each year is have Dane in mind while you get the trails running as good as you can, and then enjoy laps with some friends on the day, in celebration of the life of a trail riding, BMX badass.

I have to make special mention to Dane's mum, Jenni. Each and every year since the jam's inception, Jenni has made the trip to Canberra in support of the jam and to be around those who were friends and fans of Dane. Thanks for making the trip Jenni.

Despite the fact the start time had to change from the late afternoon to 9am, there was still a solid presence and the focus was definitely on riding. Thanks to those who showed up and cut a lap or spectated in Dane's honour.

Scott Greentree was around and shot some badass photos that you can see below with a few of my own, thanks Scott.

RIP Dane Searls.

Harti whip out

Harti didn't miss a chance to get whipped out though. Chris was up at the trails early with a small crew, doing final prep work to make sure it was ready to go. Then ripped hard. Photo: Scott Greentree

Rhysty table

Speaking of putting in time at the trails, Rhysty might have been up there at 6am this day. It's not the first time he is up there at dawn anyway. Puts in work and then lets a oppo table fly as a reward. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Parrot seat grab one foot table

Kris McCreath (AKA Parrot) is one of few who put in many hours on the shovel at the trails and it shows; he lays down the law once it's time to ride! Seat grab one foot table. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Ando x-up

Chris 'Ando' Anderson is one of Dane's oldest friends, which makes it very awesome to be able to hold an event that Ando is able to attend. And shred. Him and Shane Biffen (in the bowl) tore it up. Thanks for coming! Photo: Scott Greentree

Tyrone last hip

We don't get to see Tyrone Edwards at the trails too much, but seeing him blast like this, makes me want to see him at the trails more often! Every set juiced till it was dry. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Dane Searls tribute poster

This year we were able to commemorate Dane's life and legacy with this amazing photo by Raine Turnbull, which we have turned into a limited edition, large format poster print. If you would like a copy, they are available here (or click the photo), with all proceeds going to the costs of running the jam.

The Back Bone Video - Crash Section Bonus

Obviously no one wants to crash. But the dudes went full boar for three years, that means some crashes trying some serious stuff. This was made to show just how hard the crew went at it while filming the video. There's also a few funny ones in there.

If you haven't watched the video yet and these crashes got you stoked to watch what the crew land, then hit this link here.

The Back Bone Video - Credits section

Let's not forget about the credits! This has got some of the wildest footage from the video. From Mike 'Hucker' Clark's wild snake charming antics, to some funny outtakes and crashes, this is definitely a way to reflect on the fun times we had making the video.

Thanks again to Brendan Boeck for filming and editing, as well as everyone else who helped filmed and give guidance along the way.

The Back Bone Video - Jack O'Reilly section - Back Bone BMX

The Back Bone Video - Jack O'Reilly section

Jack and that crazy gap to nose wheelie. Raine Turnbull photo

Jack O'Reilly was relentless while filming for the Back Bone Video. Jack went out and worked his ass off finding spots and filming gnarly stuff, weekly for 18 months, and it shows in his part. Big rails and heavy tricks, filmed almost exclusively in Canberra.

We're stoked to have Jack bring in the final section of the Back Bone video and he is a long way from done finding gnarly spots and shutting them down.

If you haven't checked out Jack's top fives which features some amazing photos during the shooting of the video, go hit it now.

Filmed and edited by Brendan Boeck with additional filming by the crew.

If you didn't realise that we released Zac Miner's section early for his 30th birthday, then go watch that now if you want to see it in order! Next up with the release is Back Bone co-owner Mr.Tyson Jones-Peni. Tyson's riding is as powerful and as badass as it gets. He leaves nothing left in the tank and isn't afraid to try something that he has only thought as possible in his own mind.

A large percentage of these clips are close to first try (which is very lucky considering the gnarly nature of them) and Tyson covers all disciplines of riding in a very well rounded section.

When Tyson's not working in the store and he's on his bike, this is an accurate representation of his riding at all times.

The Back Bone Video - Will Gunn Section - Back Bone BMX

The Back Bone Video - Will Gunn Section

The Gunn at Milthorpe. Brendan Boeck photo.

Will Gunn is a BEAST. The man rides everything so insanely well, he might be the best rider ever. There is so many gnarly, gnarly clips in this that had us almost too scared to hold the camera, let alone even contemplate doing the riding. But each time, Will kept his cool and got it done all too easy.

We're stoked that there's footage in the video that spans from when Will lived in Canberra, to his trip to the USA, to his hometown parks Milthorpe and Orange where he currently resides.

B-Dog did wonders with the camera and editing as always, plus Canberra band I Exist keeping up with the brutality that is Will Gunn. Watch!

The Back Bone Video - Trail Mix Section

Some might say the most anticipated section from the video, even though no-one knew that there was going to be a trail section. But hey, this is the Back Bone video.. there was always going to be a trail section. Featuring all kinds of heads from Australia and across the world. We're really proud to have had this opportunity to showcase some of the best trail builders and riders the underground has to offer in our video.. Trail builders inspire us to do what we do at the shop and this section is in many ways a thank you to those who keep the flame lit.

Filmed and edited by Brendan Boeck with additional filming from the crew. Special thanks to Jared Carter for most of the overseas footage.
