BMX Bikes FAQs
What is a BMX bike?
A BMX bike is an all terrain bicycle that was created in the 1970s by youths modifying their dragster bicycles to emulate motocross riders so they too could jump and make aggressive turns. This is why BMX stands for Bicycle Moto Cross (X). Over the years, the material and geometry has been refined, to make a strong BMX bike that could withstand more punishment and perform better. As BMX evolved, so did the bikes, with the modern BMX bike being even more light weight while still remaining very strong. Now you can get a cheap BMX bike without having to replace parts straight away.
There are many different styles of BMX bikes to suit all types of BMX disciplines. Whether you are looking to buy a BMX bike to ride freestyle at the skatepark, street or the trails, we recommend any of the awesome BMX bikes for sale at Back Bone BMX but are certainly happy to speak to you over the phone or via e-mail with any questions you might have.

How much does a BMX bike cost?
BMX bikes can vary in cost, but remember, the cost reflects the quality! While you might be able to get a BMX bike from a department store for less than $200, that bike isn't going to last and end up costing you more in the long run.
Over the years we've been open, we have felt it necessary to stock bikes that start around the $300-400 mark. The reason is that we want to make sure that the bike that's going out to a customer is going to be suitable to ride BMX on - it's intended use! So far, we haven't seen bikes under this price mark with enough quality to last while riding BMX.
As bikes go up in price, you can expect to see higher quality, stronger materials and bikes that serve a more specific purpose.
What BMX size should I get?
We have broken down BMX sizing into three basic categories:
- Junior BMX bikes (riders under 140cm tall)
- Youth BMX bikes (riders 130 - 170cm tall)
- Adult BMX bikes (riders 160cm+)
As you can see, there is a small amount of height overlap in these three categories, as there is the opportunity to ride a slightly bigger bike, or a slightly smaller one, depending on how you want it to feel.
A rider who is interested in street riding may want a slightly shorter top tube length than a rider who wants to ride trails.
