Cult Down Under video (Welcome to the team Jason Watts) - Back Bone BMX

Cult Down Under video (Welcome to the team Jason Watts)

No doubt you've seen this increddddible 17+ minute long rip snorter of a video from the Cult crew by now, but if you haven't, now is the time to really sit back and absorb some seriously, seriously, amazing riding in our own backyard. Corey Walsh and Dan Foley were able to travel across the Pacific with BMX filmer and all-round legend Veesh, to meet up with our bro (and long time Back Bone team rider) Benn Pigot, as well as newly appointed Cult team rider (and also Back Bone team rider) Jason Watts.

The dudes spent some time in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as a bunch of time in here in Canberra, destroying the place in the best way they know how, on a BMX bike. Plenty of the trails in this vid, as well as a heavy dose of Canberra skateparks.

The Cult crew also put on a hell of a show with a jam at Belconnen skatepark one of the days they were here, I shot some photos for that, which you can see below.

If this video doesn't get you stoked on what Cult is doing, as well as what the Australian BMX scene has to offer, then you might be doing the wrong thing!

Welcome To Back Bone BMX Jason Watts Video!

We couldn't be more stoked on this. Jason Watts has been coming to the ACT jam for a number of years now and has always been stoked on the scene here in Canberra and Australia. At last year's jam, Jase spent some extra time around Canberra and we got to talking. Basically he shared the same stoke for the shop as we did for him and his riding, but particularly as the rad dude that he is and his passion for building the Australian scene. So naturally, we offered him a spot on the team.

Jase wanted to film a welcome video as soon as it became 'official' but unbeknown to us Jason took it upon himself to contact the legend James Fox to make it happen.. We couldn't be more stoked on the outcome and look forward to working with Jase (and James) even more in the future!

D.A.N.E Jam 2017 - Back Bone BMX

D.A.N.E Jam 2017

Some of the crowd, stoked to have a crew arrive despite the time change. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Six years have passed since Dane Searls' passed away, it never gets any easier to think of the reason why this jam is held. But all you can do each year is have Dane in mind while you get the trails running as good as you can, and then enjoy laps with some friends on the day, in celebration of the life of a trail riding, BMX badass.

I have to make special mention to Dane's mum, Jenni. Each and every year since the jam's inception, Jenni has made the trip to Canberra in support of the jam and to be around those who were friends and fans of Dane. Thanks for making the trip Jenni.

Despite the fact the start time had to change from the late afternoon to 9am, there was still a solid presence and the focus was definitely on riding. Thanks to those who showed up and cut a lap or spectated in Dane's honour.

Scott Greentree was around and shot some badass photos that you can see below with a few of my own, thanks Scott.

RIP Dane Searls.

Harti whip out

Harti didn't miss a chance to get whipped out though. Chris was up at the trails early with a small crew, doing final prep work to make sure it was ready to go. Then ripped hard. Photo: Scott Greentree

Rhysty table

Speaking of putting in time at the trails, Rhysty might have been up there at 6am this day. It's not the first time he is up there at dawn anyway. Puts in work and then lets a oppo table fly as a reward. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Kris McCreath (AKA Parrot) is one of few who put in many hours on the shovel at the trails and it shows; he lays down the law once it's time to ride! Seat grab one foot table. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Ando x-up

Chris 'Ando' Anderson is one of Dane's oldest friends, which makes it very awesome to be able to hold an event that Ando is able to attend. And shred. Him and Shane Biffen (in the bowl) tore it up. Thanks for coming! Photo: Scott Greentree

Tyrone last hip

We don't get to see Tyrone Edwards at the trails too much, but seeing him blast like this, makes me want to see him at the trails more often! Every set juiced till it was dry. Photo: Tyson Jones-Peni

Dane Searls tribute poster

This year we were able to commemorate Dane's life and legacy with this amazing photo by Raine Turnbull, which we have turned into a limited edition, large format poster print. If you would like a copy, they are available here (or click the photo), with all proceeds going to the costs of running the jam.

Every now and again there is a video that comes out that encapsulates BMX. This is that video. The Credence boys are livin' free, there's no doubt about it. Sick to see a whole mess of footage from all over.

You're gonna be watching this over and over until the video comes out.. Christmas can't come fast enough!

The Back Bone Video - Tyson Jones-Peni Section

If you didn't realise that we released Zac Miner's section early for his 30th birthday, then go watch that now if you want to see it in order! Next up with the release is Back Bone co-owner Mr.Tyson Jones-Peni. Tyson's riding is as powerful and as badass as it gets. He leaves nothing left in the tank and isn't afraid to try something that he has only thought as possible in his own mind.

A large percentage of these clips are close to first try (which is very lucky considering the gnarly nature of them) and Tyson covers all disciplines of riding in a very well rounded section.

When Tyson's not working in the store and he's on his bike, this is an accurate representation of his riding at all times.

The Back Bone Video - Will Gunn Section - Back Bone BMX

The Back Bone Video - Will Gunn Section

The Gunn at Milthorpe. Brendan Boeck photo.

Will Gunn is a BEAST. The man rides everything so insanely well, he might be the best rider ever. There is so many gnarly, gnarly clips in this that had us almost too scared to hold the camera, let alone even contemplate doing the riding. But each time, Will kept his cool and got it done all too easy.

We're stoked that there's footage in the video that spans from when Will lived in Canberra, to his trip to the USA, to his hometown parks Milthorpe and Orange where he currently resides.

B-Dog did wonders with the camera and editing as always, plus Canberra band I Exist keeping up with the brutality that is Will Gunn. Watch!

The Back Bone Video - Trail Mix Section

Some might say the most anticipated section from the video, even though no-one knew that there was going to be a trail section. But hey, this is the Back Bone video.. there was always going to be a trail section. Featuring all kinds of heads from Australia and across the world. We're really proud to have had this opportunity to showcase some of the best trail builders and riders the underground has to offer in our video.. Trail builders inspire us to do what we do at the shop and this section is in many ways a thank you to those who keep the flame lit.

Filmed and edited by Brendan Boeck with additional filming from the crew. Special thanks to Jared Carter for most of the overseas footage.

The Back Bone Video - Rhysty section - Back Bone BMX

The Back Bone Video - Rhysty section

The big dog. Rhysty opened the shop in 2005 and it has been keeping the flame lit for 12 years. His passion for BMX and building trails has gone on for 30+ years and that passion flowed on to opening the store, as well as travelling the world to visit different trail spots.

His section in the video reflects that, visiting trails in West Australia, to Eastern Pennsylvania, to his backyard and his trail spot, Hillfire, in Canberra.

When we came up with the plan to film a video, Rhysty was 36 years old. Being 36 years old and filming your first video part was a little daunting for Rhys, but he came through with exactly what it needed to be - a reflection of his lifestyle. Rhysty at the trails, riding smooth as you'd like.

Filmed and edited by Brendan Boeck with additional filming from the crew.

The Back Bone Video - Chris Harti Section - Back Bone BMX

The Back Bone Video - Chris Harti Section

What a way to rip into a Tuesday arvo.. We're psyched to put Harti's section online for everyone to see. Chris put in serious work to make his section happen, not only in terms of riding, but spending a bunch of time building one of the most serious trail spots ever with Raine Turnbull. If you don't see Harti around the parks, it's because he is at the trails. But don't let that fool you, Chris has shut down multiple lines at the parks too. If you've ever been to Belco or Civic parks, you'll know that what he does at these parks in the video is ridiculous.

Sit back and watch the Hartbreaker himself, then go chuck on a Rat crewneck and join the crew!
